Coordinator of National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Mr Joseph Modi, has said Nigerian women produce more than 50 per cent of the country's food need but they still live in penury and deprivation, due to lack of modern knowledge and skill to preserve their farm produce.
Modi said this at a four-day workshop on food processing organised by NDE, in collaboration with the office of the wife of Ebonyi State Governor.
He said women in developing countries play major roles in agriculture development, yet their efforts are neither recognised by government nor does it improve their standard of living.
Modi said NDE and the office of the First Lady of Ebonyi State are aware of the important role women play in society, hence, organised the workshop with the objective of teaching rural women how to create wealth and generate employment through the maximisation of their farm produce.
In a speech, Ebonyi State Governor's wife Mrs Eunice Ukamaka Egwu, said women need to acquire skill as farmers, noting that they are hardworking but have nothing to show for it.
She called on the participants to take the workshop seriously and share their experience with those in their communities so that knowledge they spread to all the women farmers in the state.
She said NDE would grant loan to women to invest more in farming, stating that the workshop would help the farmers grow from where they are to a higher level
